History can date human existence back to 200 thousand years ago. This prehistoric beings survived on a diet much different from what we have today. This was as a result of civilization which brought about development of agriculture, processing, refining and preservation of food. In the last century the level to which foods are processed and refined has increased tremendously, making them dangerous. Researchers state that this drastic change in the diet is responsible for the myriad of diseases affecting humanity today. The primitive men had their own diet which they used to live on. In 1970s was argued that the food was healthy and could save humankind from chronic diseases and increase their body fitness. The caveman diet has helped in a great way improve people’s body wellness.

Merits

· Good for weight loss

People who include the caveman diet in their daily intake experience effects on their weight loss. These foods help reduce the amount of insulin as a result reducing the sugar level in the blood. Fats are broken down instead of being stored. This diet replaces carbs with proteins.

· It is basically natural hunted food

One of the main advantages of this diet is that it was naturally and easily found. It was void of chemical additives since there was none at that time. Food was preserved in natural way and this was safe since no chemical elements could be added. Cavemen did not spend their time hunting for hamburgers or pizzas.

· Void of food by-products

Caveman food didn’t allow food by-products which sometimes contain extra chemicals. The food used to be eaten whole without taking interest of the by-products.

Demerits

· High levels of saturated fat consumption

One of the downsides of caveman diet is that it has high amount in saturated fat. This could be due to the high amount of protein available. In the past, this could not be a problem due to their kind of lifestyle. In the old, they used to spend a lot of time hunting while today most people spend their days seated.

· Unbalanced diet

People following these foods have deficiency on some important elements that may be taken care of in the modern diet. Today’s diet has taken care of the deficit. Grains and other non-saturated oils used today are known to produce overall health results that are beneficial.

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that caveman diet is still significant today for weight loss and those who wish to try it should consult with a nutritionist and/or doctor to get advice on using this type of diet.
